Renewable certificates

I-RECs, CELs, GOs and other energy attribute certificates, sourced for your company and redeemed in its name.

I-RECs

What is an I-REC?

Proof of renewable generation

An International Renewable Energy Certificate (I-REC) is verifiable, traceable digital evidence that 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of energy was generated from a renewable source and added to the grid.

Governed by The International Tracking Standard Foundation

A non-profit organization that ensures transparent, credible issuance, transfer and verification of certificates.

Full project details

A participant can redeem an I-REC in an end user's name. Each one carries key information about the generation project, including asset name, technology and location.

How is an I-REC useful?

  • By purchasing I-RECs, you are the sole owner of the renewable attributes associated with the energy of your certificate.
  • Once redeemed in someone's name, I-RECs are retired from circulation. This proves the end user has claimed the renewable benefits and prevents anyone else from reusing them.
  • I-RECs can be used to address Scope 2 emissions: the indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchased electricity.

Redemption statement

What a redemption looks like

When certificates are redeemed in your company's name, the registry issues a redemption statement. It is the document you share with auditors and reporting frameworks such as CDP and RE100 as proof of your renewable electricity claim. Here is what each part means.

Example I-REC redemption statement
  1. 1

    Beneficiary

The company in whose name the certificates were redeemed. Only this beneficiary can claim the renewable electricity.

  2. 2

    Redeemed by

The registry participant that carried out the redemption on the beneficiary's behalf: Moendi BM S.A. de C.V.

  3. 3

    Volume redeemed

The number of I-RECs redeemed. Each I-REC represents 1 MWh of electricity generated from renewable sources.

  4. 4

    Consumption location

Where the covered electricity was consumed: the site or facility and the country.

  5. 5

    Reporting period

The dates of the electricity consumption the statement covers, usually a calendar year.

  6. 6

    Redemption purpose

A short statement of what the certificates are used for, for example reporting renewable electricity for a given year.

  7. 7

    QR verification

Anyone, such as an auditor, can scan the QR code and enter the verification key to confirm the statement directly in the registry.

The statement also includes auditor notes: I-RECs are assigned to the beneficiary at redemption and cannot be transferred to anyone else, and no other use of those certificates is valid under The International Tracking Standard Foundation.

EKOenergy label

EKOenergy label

Add an internationally recognized ecolabel

  • EKOenergy is an internationally recognized ecolabel for renewable energy that increases the positive impact of using I-RECs.
  • As an authorized EKOenergy seller, Moendi can apply this label to eligible I-RECs.
  • The label is endorsed by standards such as the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and organizations like CDP and RE100.
Clean energy generation in Mexico

CELs

What is a CEL?

CEL stands for Certificado de Energía Limpia (Clean Energy Certificate): a Mexican certificate issued by the CNE (National Energy Commission), which replaced the CRE in 2025.

CELs were created as part of Mexico's energy reform to promote the generation and use of clean energy. Each one proves that 1 MWh was generated from a clean or renewable source and added to the grid.

How is a CEL useful?

  • In the MEM (Mexican Wholesale Electricity Market), every Qualified User must cover a specific share of their annual electricity consumption with clean energy.
  • As mandated by Mexico's Ministry of Energy (SENER), the current requirement is 13.90%: users must obtain CELs equivalent to that share of their consumption.
  • Their Qualified Supplier is responsible for procuring the necessary CELs on their behalf.

Comparison

What is the difference between CELs and I-RECs?

FeatureCELsI-RECs
Purpose Mandatory for Qualified Users in Mexico Voluntary, driven by each user's sustainability goals
Eligible sources Clean energy sources Renewable energy sources only
Traceability No details on technology, project or location Include technology, project, location and other details
Accepted by GHG Protocol, CDP and RE100 No, due to the lack of traceability Yes
